458th Bombardment Group (H)
Able Mabel
B-24H-20-FO 42-95008 J3 R
Shot down June 29, 1944 – MACR 7086
The origin of the name of this aircraft is unknown, and to date no photograph has been found. 2nd Air Division researcher Tom Brittain has Able Mabel in his records.
The aircraft’s first recorded mission with the 755th Bomb Squadron was on April 25, 1944. Twelve crews took this aircraft over the continent for 20 missions until it’s luck ran out on No. 21. On June 29, 1944, the 458th was to attack the Junkers Airframe Factory in Aschersleben, Germany. 2Lt William P. Perkinson and crew, took of in Able Mabel on their second mission and failed to return. Losing No. 3 engine while crossing the English Coast, their Instructor Pilot, 1Lt Robert H. Hannaman, an Operations Officer in the 755th Squadron, thought they would be okay to continue the mission. They made the target and were able to drop their bombs, but were hit in No. 4 engine. With two engines now out on the same side their fate was sealed. They made it to Westrhauderfehn, about 230 miles from the target when they were forced to abandon the aircraft. All were taken POW.
